TROOPS OF OPERATION FANSAN YAMMA INTERCEPTS COURIER WITH 180 EXPLOSIVES, NEUTRALISE TERRORISTS IN ZAMFARA

Troops of Joint Task Force North West, Operation FANSAN YAMMA, have intensified offensive and intelligence-led operations in Zamfara State, neutralising terrorists, recovering weapons and intercepting a suspected courier transporting 180 explosive materials allegedly destined for terrorist elements in Katsina State.

• Two terrorists were confirmed neutralised during an encounter in Birnin Magaji Local Government Area.

• Troops recovered two rifles, two magazines, nine rounds of ammunition and two motorcycles.

• A 57-year-old suspected courier was intercepted during a snap check with 180 units of 20mm Super Power explosives.

• The explosives were allegedly being transported from Gusau, Zamfara State, to suspected terrorist elements in Jibia, Katsina State.

• The operation also disrupted an attempted ambush by terrorists during the clearance operation.

The operations were conducted on August 14, 2026, as troops of Sector 2 carried out offensive clearance operations in Birnin Magaji Local Government Area. Troops encountered terrorists around Garin Kaso and engaged them in a firefight, during which two terrorists were confirmed neutralised. The troops subsequently recovered two rifles, two magazines, nine rounds of ammunition and two motorcycles.

According to Operation FANSAN YAMMA, as the operation progressed, another group of terrorists attempted to ambush the troops from concealed positions. The soldiers fought through the ambush, inflicting further casualties and forcing surviving terrorists to withdraw.

The exact number of casualties from the second encounter could not be independently confirmed. However, reports from communities in the area indicated that fleeing terrorists evacuated several members of their group who had sustained gunshot wounds, alongside the bodies of some of those killed.

In a separate operation on the same day, troops conducting routine snap checks intercepted a suspected arms and explosives courier identified as 57-year-old Sani Umar. A search of his vehicle reportedly led to the recovery of 180 units of 20mm Super Power explosives. The explosives were allegedly being transported from Gusau Local Government Area of Zamfara State for delivery to suspected terrorist elements operating in Jibia Local Government Area of Katsina State. The suspect, vehicle and recovered explosives have been handed into custody for further investigation.

The operations reflect the continued offensive posture of Operation FANSAN YAMMA, combining direct action against terrorist groups with efforts to disrupt the logistics networks through which weapons and explosive materials are moved.

The Joint Task Force said the operations demonstrate its resolve to deny terrorists and other criminal elements freedom of action across the North West.

The latest operation comes against the backdrop of continuing Nigerian Army operations against terrorist and criminal networks across the North West. Recently, troops of 18 Brigade recorded a separate series of successes in Niger State, where operations across Mariga and Rijau LGAs led to the rescue of nine kidnapped victims, the disruption of attempted terrorist attacks and the recovery of weapons, motorcycles and suspected rustled livestock. Taken together, the operations point to a broader security approach involving offensive operations, intelligence-led targeting, community information and disruption of the resources and mobility used by criminal groups.
