NIA AKWA IBOM CHAPTER TOURS AKICORP HQ PROJECT, REINFORCES PROFESSIONAL AND SAFETY STANDARDS

The Nigerian Institute of Architects (NIA), Akwa Ibom State Chapter, has conducted a technical visit to the ongoing Akwa Ibom Investment Corporation (AKICORP) Corporate Headquarters project along Dominic Utuk Avenue, Uyo, as part of its programme of technical tours of major infrastructure projects under the State Government's ARISE Agenda. The August 12 visit focused on construction quality, professional coordination, site safety, project documentation and the practical development of architecture students and young professionals.

The Nigerian Institute of Architects, Akwa Ibom State Chapter, visited the AKICORP Corporate Headquarters project on August 12, 2026, as part of its scheduled technical tours of major infrastructure projects being undertaken under the State's ARISE Agenda. The initiative is intended to promote professional engagement, knowledge sharing and appreciation of architectural, engineering and construction practices across Akwa Ibom.

According to NIAAKSC, the AKICORP headquarters is a two-storey office complex being developed on Dominic Utuk Avenue, Uyo. The project has transformed a previously erosion-prone and environmentally challenged site into a corporate development, representing one of the administration's ongoing infrastructure interventions. During the visit, the NIA team assessed aspects of project execution and offered professional observations aimed at supporting quality delivery.

The Chapter Chairman, Arc. Edidiong Ukpong, FNIA, PhD, commended the State Government for the project and other ongoing developments, including the Arise Palm Resort and the proposed AKBC building. He also encouraged the consultant, Aim Consultant, to maintain close coordination with the contractor, Eyo Concepts, to ensure that the project is executed in accordance with specified standards, quality requirements and professional expectations.

Site safety was another major area of concern. The NIA team called for improved provision and consistent use of Personal Protective Equipment by personnel working on the project. The team further requested that the project information board prominently display relevant project particulars for public information and transparency. It also advised that approved working drawings be made available and properly displayed in the designated site office. Effective site housekeeping was equally emphasised to improve safety and ensure unobstructed circulation within the construction area.

The Chapter also recognised the participation of architects within both the consultant and contractor teams, describing their involvement as evidence of the profession's contribution to major infrastructure delivery in the State. NIA members further commended the project team for providing Industrial Training opportunities for architecture students, allowing them to gain firsthand exposure to construction processes, site management, project coordination and professional practice.

The technical visit forms part of the NIA Akwa Ibom State Chapter's broader programme of touring major infrastructure projects associated with the State's ARISE Agenda. Other recent technical-tour activities include the Chapter's visit to the Arise Shopping City in Uyo on July 8, 2026. Beyond professional observation, NIA technical visits serve educational and professional-development purposes by exposing architects, trainees and students to actual construction methods, project coordination and site-management practices. Such engagement also provides an opportunity for the profession to identify construction and safety concerns, encourage compliance with applicable standards and promote coordination among architects, engineers, contractors and project owners.
