The Federal Government has announced plans to phase out the policy separating Junior Secondary Schools (JSS) from Senior Secondary Schools (SSS), citing evidence that the arrangement has contributed to poor transition rates and millions of out-of-school children. Minister of Education, Dr. Tunji Alausa, said the policy has failed to achieve its intended objectives, noting that over 20 million pupils drop out before reaching senior secondary school. He attributed the challenge partly to the imbalance between the number of public primary schools and junior secondary schools, which has resulted in overcrowded JSS facilities and underutilized senior secondary schools. The Akwa Ibom State Government has commended President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for the Federal Government's ₦4.2 billion Social Safety Net Programme benefiting 56,402 vulnerable residents across the state's 31 local government areas. Speaking during the debit card distribution ceremony in Ika Local Government Area, the Commissioner for Humanitarian Affairs, Princess Emem Ibanga, said beneficiaries would receive preloaded debit cards worth ₦75,000 each, representing ₦25,000 monthly for three months, to support livelihoods and small businesses. A Federal High Court in Abuja has granted activist and former presidential candidate, Omoyele Sowore, fresh bail in the sum of ₦200 million following the revocation of his earlier bail over his failure to appear for trial. Justice Muhammad Umar ruled that Sowore must provide two sureties, one a traditional ruler from his community and the other a property owner within the Federal Capital Territory, and deposit his international passport with the court pending the conclusion of the case. Sowore, who is facing cybercrime charges instituted by the Department of State Services (DSS) over alleged social media posts, has pleaded not guilty. The court adjourned proceedings to July 6, when he is expected to commence his defence. Following the ruling, Sowore maintained that the bail conditions would not deter his advocacy or activities.
