President Tinubu Signs NIMC Act 2026 into Law, Strengthening Nigeria's Digital Identity Framework

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has signed the National Identity Management Commission (NIMC) Act 2026 into law, introducing a modern legal framework aimed at strengthening Nigeria's digital identity system and supporting the country's digital economy.

According to the President, the new law positions the NIMC at the centre of Nigeria's Digital Public Infrastructure, enhances the protection of citizens' personal data, and strengthens the role of the National Identification Number (NIN) in accessing key public and private services, including passports, banking, voter registration, pensions, taxation, telecommunications, and government services.



The Act also introduces stricter penalties for identity theft, multiple registrations, unauthorized access to identity data, and other abuses of the national identity system, while seeking to ensure that vulnerable groups and Nigerians in the diaspora have access to trusted digital identification.
