𝙉𝘾𝘿𝙈𝘽 𝙍𝙚𝙬𝙖𝙧𝙙𝙨 𝙀𝙣𝙜𝙞𝙣𝙚𝙚𝙧𝙞𝙣𝙜 𝙄𝙣𝙣𝙤𝙫𝙖𝙩𝙞𝙤𝙣 𝙬𝙞𝙩𝙝 ₦50 𝙈𝙞𝙡𝙡𝙞𝙤𝙣 𝙂𝙧𝙖𝙣𝙙 𝙋𝙧𝙞𝙯𝙚 𝙖𝙩 𝙈𝙖𝙞𝙙𝙚𝙣 𝙉𝙞𝙜𝙚𝙧𝙞𝙖𝙣 𝙀𝙣𝙜𝙞𝙣𝙚𝙚𝙧𝙞𝙣𝙜 𝙊𝙡𝙮𝙢𝙥𝙞𝙖𝙙

The Nigerian Content Development and Monitoring Board (NCDMB) has reinforced its commitment to nurturing indigenous engineering talent by recognising outstanding student innovations at the inaugural Nigerian Engineering Olympiad held in Lagos.

Emerging as the overall winner was Team Mavericks from Modibbo Adama University, Yola, whose project, Sarafa Community Security Alert, impressed judges with its practical approach to improving emergency response through a community-based rapid alert system designed to enhance public safety during security incidents.

In recognition of the achievement, the team received the competition's grand prize of ₦50 million, while the university's Faculty of Engineering was awarded a fully sponsored Centre of Excellence Building by the NCDMB to strengthen engineering education, research and innovation.

Other top-performing teams were also rewarded for their outstanding projects. Team Aurora from the University of Ibadan secured second place, receiving ₦30 million alongside engineering equipment valued at ₦75 million. Team Fortizo of the University of Jos finished third and received ₦20 million, in addition to engineering equipment worth ₦50 million.

The organisers also recognised Team Flameless from the University of Nigeria, Nsukka, with a ₦10 million prize for developing an innovative solution that converts flare gas into electricity, demonstrating the potential of technology to address energy and environmental challenges.

The maiden edition of the Olympiad attracted significant national participation, receiving 375 project entries from 984 students representing 80 tertiary institutions across Nigeria. Participants showcased innovative solutions addressing pressing national issues in sectors such as security, healthcare, agriculture, renewable energy, manufacturing and industrial development.

Speaking at the event, the NCDMB reaffirmed that human capital development, innovation and entrepreneurship remain central to its mandate of deepening Nigerian content in the oil and gas sector while supporting broader national industrialisation.

The Board noted that investing in young innovators and future engineers is critical to building a globally competitive workforce capable of providing homegrown solutions to Nigeria's development challenges. It added that initiatives such as the Engineering Olympiad are designed to encourage creativity, practical problem-solving and research-driven innovation among Nigerian students.

The competition concluded with commendations for all participating institutions and teams, whose innovations reflected the growing potential of Nigerian youths to contribute meaningfully to national development through science, engineering and technology.
