Nana Shettima Launches Green Nigeria Challenge in Jigawa, Calls for Mass Tree Planting to Combat Climate Change

The Wife of the Vice President, Hajiya Nana Kashim Shettima, has launched the Renewed Hope Initiative (RHI) Green Nigeria Challenge in Jigawa State, calling for the active participation of households, schools, communities, and youth groups in combating desertification and climate change through mass tree planting and environmental conservation.

Representing the First Lady, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, at the inauguration of the programme, Shettima said the initiative, themed "Go Green Today for a Greener Tomorrow," is designed to promote practical environmental action through tree planting, sanitation campaigns, waste recycling, erosion control, and biodiversity conservation. She identified Jigawa as one of Nigeria's frontline states most vulnerable to desertification and encouraged residents to plant drought-resistant tree species, including neem, moringa, date palm, mango, and guava, to restore degraded land and strengthen climate resilience.

Governor Umar Namadi reaffirmed Jigawa State's commitment to environmental sustainability, highlighting ongoing climate initiatives, including the mobilisation of nearly 3,000 students into conservation teams and the establishment of six Environmental Societies in tertiary institutions. To encourage grassroots participation, he announced a ₦50 million prize for outstanding youth groups and environmental societies participating in the Green Nigeria Challenge.
