The Federal Government has announced plans to replace the iconic khaki uniform worn by members of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) with locally produced Adire fabric, as part of broader reforms aimed at promoting indigenous industries, stimulating economic growth, and strengthening Nigeria's textile sector.

The Minister of Youth Development, Ayodele Olawande, disclosed the proposal during an interview on Channels Television's The Morning Brief, stating that the initiative aligns with the government's commitment to prioritising locally manufactured products and retaining public spending within the Nigerian economy.

According to the minister, Adire fabrics are produced across several states, including Ogun and Kwara, where textile production has continued to support local artisans and manufacturers. He explained that adopting Adire as the official NYSC uniform would channel government patronage towards Nigerian producers, create jobs, encourage investment in the textile industry, and promote the country's rich cultural heritage.

Beyond the proposed uniform change, Olawande revealed that the Federal Government is also reviewing the NYSC deployment process to ensure that corps members are posted to organisations and institutions that align with their academic qualifications, professional training, and technical skills.

He noted that the reforms are intended to modernise the NYSC scheme by making the one-year national service more productive and beneficial to both corps members and host organisations. Matching graduates with roles relevant to their areas of study, he said, would improve workforce development, enhance service delivery, and enable participants to gain practical experience that supports their long-term career aspirations.

The planned reforms form part of the government's broader efforts to reposition the NYSC as a stronger platform for youth development, national integration, and economic empowerment while simultaneously supporting local production and industrial growth.
