The Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) has commenced a Strategic Refresher Course for 100 Deputy Comptrollers as part of its ongoing leadership development strategy aimed at preparing senior officers for higher command responsibilities, strengthening institutional discipline, and sustaining the Service's modernization reforms.
The Nigeria Customs Service has intensified efforts to build a future-ready leadership cadre with the commencement of a Strategic Refresher Course for 100 Deputy Comptrollers at the Nigeria Customs Command and Staff College, Gwagwalada. The training programme, organised by the Human Resources Development Department in collaboration with the Customs Police Unit, is designed to equip officers with the leadership, ethical, and managerial competencies required to assume greater responsibilities as the Service continues its modernization and reform agenda.
Declaring the workshop open on behalf of the Comptroller-General of Customs, Adewale Adeniyi, the Commandant of the Nigeria Customs Command and Staff College, Assistant Comptroller-General Dow Gaura, described the participants as officers carefully identified for future leadership roles within the Service. He explained that beyond enhancing professional knowledge, the programme seeks to strengthen discipline, integrity, succession planning, and leadership culture among senior officers who will shape the future direction of the Nigeria Customs Service.
The keynote lecture, delivered by retired Deputy Comptroller-General of Customs Dera Nnadi, focused on the responsibilities that accompany promotion within public institutions. He reminded participants that advancement in rank should be viewed primarily as an opportunity for greater service rather than personal privilege. According to Nnadi, senior officers are expected to demonstrate accountability not only to the institution but also to colleagues, junior officers, stakeholders, and the Nigerian public.
Also addressing participants, the Deputy Commandant and Director of Studies of the College, Comptroller Haniel Hadison, stressed the importance of maintaining discipline, professionalism, and exemplary conduct, noting that leadership standards are established through personal behaviour and effective supervision.
Earlier, the Acting Customs Provost Marshal, Deputy Comptroller Sanusi Saulawa, explained that the refresher programme reflects the Comptroller-General's commitment to continuous professional development and institutional excellence. He noted that officers occupying strategic positions must continuously update their knowledge, strengthen leadership capacity, and uphold the values of discipline, professionalism, and integrity expected of senior managers.
Participants at the programme commended the Customs leadership for approving the initiative, describing it as timely and beneficial. They pledged to apply the knowledge acquired to improve service delivery, strengthen discipline, and contribute to the ongoing transformation of the Nigeria Customs Service.
