𝐓𝐢𝐧𝐮𝐛𝐮 𝐋𝐚𝐮𝐧𝐜𝐡𝐞𝐬 ‘𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐏𝐨𝐰𝐞𝐫 𝐅𝐨𝐫𝐜𝐞’ 𝐈𝐧𝐢𝐭𝐢𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐯𝐞 𝐭𝐨 𝐓𝐫𝐚𝐢𝐧 5,000 𝐘𝐨𝐮𝐭𝐡𝐬 𝐚𝐬 𝐌𝐞𝐭𝐞𝐫 𝐈𝐧𝐬𝐭𝐚𝐥𝐥𝐞𝐫𝐬

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has announced the launch of The Power Force, a new youth empowerment programme under the Presidential Metering Initiative (PMI), aimed at training 5,000 young Nigerians as meter installers and technicians to support the country's drive toward universal electricity metering.

The initiative forms part of the Federal Government's broader Renewed Hope Agenda, which prioritises job creation, skills development, and reforms in Nigeria's power sector. According to the President, the programme is designed not only to provide employment opportunities for young people but also to address the country's longstanding metering deficit, eliminate estimated billing, and improve transparency in electricity distribution.

Tinubu stated that participants will receive practical technical training that equips them with employable skills while connecting them to meaningful work within Nigeria's electricity value chain. He described the programme as a pathway to sustainable livelihoods, noting that the power sector presents significant opportunities for skilled young Nigerians.

The President explained that applications will be open to eligible Nigerians who have completed their secondary school education, while a dedicated quota has been reserved for members of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) to encourage greater youth participation.

He emphasised that expanding access to prepaid meters remains critical to improving electricity service delivery across the country. According to him, proper metering enables consumers to pay only for the electricity they consume while promoting accountability and transparency in revenue collection by electricity distribution companies.

Tinubu noted that a more efficient metering system would help electricity providers reduce commercial losses, maintain infrastructure more effectively, expand customer connections, and attract greater investment into the sector, ultimately leading to improved electricity supply for Nigerians.

To ensure timely implementation, the President directed the Presidential Metering Initiative, in collaboration with the Federal Ministry of Youth Development, the National Power Training Institute of Nigeria (NAPTIN), and other relevant stakeholders, to commence the programme within the next 30 days.

He encouraged eligible young Nigerians to seize the opportunity by applying through the official portal(Apply via: pmi.naptin.gov.ng.), which opens on July 4, 2026, stressing that the initiative combines skills acquisition, employment, and national development.

The Power Force initiative represents a strategic effort to tackle two national priorities simultaneously(youth unemployment and the electricity metering gap). By investing in technical skills while expanding Nigeria's metering capacity, the programme has the potential to create sustainable jobs, improve consumer confidence, and strengthen the efficiency of the country's power sector.

If effectively implemented, the initiative could also reduce estimated billing disputes, support electricity sector reforms, encourage private investment, and provide thousands of young Nigerians with valuable technical expertise that remains in high demand across the energy industry.
