Security Forces Rescue 44 Kidnapped Pupils and Teachers in Coordinated Multi-Agency Operation Across Oyo Forests

A coordinated security operation involving the Nigerian Army and multiple national security agencies has led to the rescue of 44 pupils and teachers who were abducted in Oyo State nearly two months ago. According to military authorities, the rescue followed weeks of intelligence-driven operations targeting terrorist networks operating within the Old Oyo National Park and other locations across the country.

The Nigerian Army has announced the successful rescue of 44 pupils and teachers who were kidnapped on 15 May 2026 from Oriire Local Government Area of Oyo State, following what it described as a carefully planned, intelligence-led counter-terrorism operation. According to a statement issued by the Headquarters, 2 Division Nigerian Army, the rescue operation was conducted on 10 July 2026 under the leadership of the General Officer Commanding (GOC) 2 Division, Major General C.R. Nnebeife, with support from the Office of the National Security Adviser (ONSA), the National Counter Terrorism Centre (NCTC), the Defence Headquarters, the Nigerian Navy, Nigerian Air Force, Nigeria Police Force, Department of State Services (DSS), National Intelligence Agency (NIA), Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), Amotekun Corps, local vigilantes and hunters.

Military authorities disclosed that the operation lasted for more than one month and focused on dismantling the terrorist network responsible for the abduction by identifying key commanders, disrupting logistics channels, exposing informants and locating hideouts within the Old Oyo National Park Forest. Security operatives reportedly carried out coordinated arrests in Oyo State and other parts of the country, significantly weakening the group's operational capacity. According to the Army, sustained pressure from the coordinated operation eventually compelled the kidnappers to unconditionally release the victims.

The military explained that the operation was deliberately planned to minimise civilian casualties and ensure the safe recovery of the abducted pupils and teachers. However, it confirmed that some members of the security forces sustained casualties during the operation. The rescued victims are currently receiving medical attention at an undisclosed medical facility before being reunited with their families through the Oyo State Government. Military authorities also indicated that follow-up operations would continue to identify and apprehend other members of the criminal network.
