Police, NPTF, POWA Deepen Welfare Agenda Through Skills Acquisition and Empowerment Initiative for Junior Officers' Spouses

The Nigeria Police Force (NPF), in collaboration with the Nigeria Police Trust Fund (NPTF) and the Police Officers' Wives Association (POWA), has launched its maiden Skills Acquisition and Empowerment Programme for spouses of junior police officers, describing the initiative as a strategic investment in family welfare, economic empowerment and stronger policing. The programme was flagged off on 20 July 2026 at the M.D. Abubakar Police Barracks, Dei-Dei, Abuja, under the theme: "Empowering Families, Strengthening Communities: Advancing the Renewed Hope Agenda Through Skills Acquisition and Economic Empowerment."

The Inspector-General of Police, IGP Olatunji Rilwan Disu, joined the Nigeria Police Trust Fund and the Police Officers' Wives Association to officially launch the empowerment programme designed to improve the economic wellbeing of police families. The event was hosted by the Minister of Police Affairs, Senator (Dr.) Ibrahim Gaidam, and attended by the Executive Secretary of the Nigeria Police Trust Fund, Mohammed Sheidu, the National President of POWA, Chief Mrs. Olufunmilola Mutiat Disu, senior police officials and beneficiary spouses from various police formations nationwide. Police authorities said the initiative combines vocational skills training with start-up support aimed at creating sustainable sources of income for participating families.


According to Inspector-General of Police Olatunji Rilwan Disu, the programme represents an investment in the stability and wellbeing of police families, stressing that the welfare of officers is closely linked to the welfare of their households. He urged beneficiaries to regard the support as a platform for achieving long-term financial independence.

According to Executive Secretary of the Nigeria Police Trust Fund, Mohammed Sheidu, empowering police families is as important as investing in police infrastructure and personnel training. He said the initiative was designed to equip beneficiaries with practical skills capable of creating sustainable household livelihoods while supporting the Federal Government's Renewed Hope Agenda.

According to National President of POWA, Chief Mrs. Olufunmilola Mutiat Disu, the programme should be viewed as a strategic investment in police professionalism rather than an act of charity. She added that national security begins with stable families and pledged continued collaboration with the Nigeria Police Trust Fund to sustain the initiative.


Improving the welfare of police families can strengthen officer morale, reduce financial pressures on households and enhance the overall effectiveness of policing. Empowerment initiatives such as this also promote entrepreneurship and economic resilience among beneficiaries.
