Troops of Sector 6, Joint Task Force Operation ENDURING PEACE (JTF OPEP) have successfully repelled an attempted attack by suspected armed criminal elements on the National Institute for Policy and Strategic Studies (NIPSS), Kuru, in Jos South Local Government Area of Plateau State.

According to the Nigerian Army, the incident occurred in the early hours of Thursday, July 2, 2026, when the attackers attempted to breach the Institute's security perimeter under the cover of darkness. Alert troops on guard duty responded swiftly, engaging the assailants in a fierce exchange of gunfire that resulted in the neutralisation of one of the attackers, while others escaped with suspected gunshot wounds into the surrounding terrain. The Army confirmed that no personnel were injured during the operation.

Following the encounter, troops recovered an AK-pattern rifle loaded with 16 rounds of 7.62mm Special ammunition. Preliminary investigations revealed that the weapon had previously belonged to a Nigerian Army soldier who was killed in action during an earlier clash with suspected militia members at the Federal College of Land Resources Technology, Vom, on April 11, 2026. Military authorities said the recovered rifle has been secured as evidence while investigations continue to determine possible links between the attackers and previous security incidents within the Kuru-Vom axis.

The remains of the neutralised suspect have been evacuated through the appropriate authorities, while security forces have intensified area domination patrols, clearance operations, and pursuit missions across NIPSS Kuru and neighbouring communities to track down the fleeing suspects and prevent further threats.

The Nigerian Army assured residents that the security situation remains under control, with normal academic and administrative activities continuing uninterrupted at the Institute. It reiterated its commitment under Operation ENDURING PEACE to safeguarding lives, protecting strategic national institutions, and maintaining peace across Plateau State.

The Army also appealed to members of the public to remain vigilant, continue with their lawful activities, and promptly report any suspicious movements or activities to security agencies, stressing that public cooperation remains essential in strengthening national security.
